The Travel Responsibly for Experiencing Ecotourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TREK) initiative along with the World Bank Group and Nestlé Pakistan have launched a program to counter waste and pollution. The program primarily covers two principles that are to create an awareness campaign that focuses on reduce, reuse, and recycle, also with a community engagement program that includes relevant activities surrounding waste pollution, etc.

The TREK initiative was launched by Prime minister Imran Khan in December 2020. The prime focus of this project was to preserve the heritage and destination development while sticking to the concept of responsible tourism. A program only for kids was launched earlier as well. The program was also launched in collaboration with Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) and was known as “TREK for Healthier Kids”. The purpose of this program was to create awareness among children. The program was concluded with the distribution of certificates, reusable bags, and Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) books to the youngsters of the Galiyat region.
The Secretary KP Tourism Department shared his views regarding the awareness program,
“Provincial government is looking for solid waste management (SWM) and plastics recycling in tourist areas through TREK initiative. Alongside the provision of SWM equipment, other activities included in this programme are awareness campaigns for tourists, and local communities. Awareness campaigns at local schools is part of this program, which will enable them to carry forward the agenda of clean and safe Galiyat”.
The Head of Corporate Affairs Nestlé Pakistan, Waqar Ahmad, also added,
“As part of our vision for a waste-free future, we are accelerating our actions to minimize solid waste and our partnership with the World Bank Group and the KP government is a step in that direction. We will be driving new behavior and understanding through community engagement such as awareness campaigns under N4HK and cleanup activities.”
