The Board of Executive Directors at the World Bank has approved a significant financing package totaling $149.7 million for Pakistan, representing a crucial step forward in the nation’s developmental aspirations.

This approval, granted on Friday, will channel funds into two key projects aimed at bolstering infrastructure and advancing digital capabilities across the country.

As detailed in a press release by the international financial institution, a substantial portion of the allocated funds, amounting to $78 million, will be directed towards the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP). This initiative aims to enhance digitally-enabled public service delivery for both citizens and businesses, thereby improving accessibility and operational efficiency.

Concurrently, $71.7 million has been allocated as additional financing for the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project. This endeavor aims to enhance resilience against floods while upgrading the reliability, safety, and management of Sindh’s crucial barrage systems, vital components of Pakistan’s water management infrastructure.

Najy Benhassine, the World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, stressed the importance of reinforcing infrastructure, particularly in light of past catastrophic events such as the 2022 floods. He emphasized the necessity of strengthening barrage infrastructure and its management to effectively mitigate the impact of such disasters.

Furthermore, Benhassine underscored the significance of nurturing Pakistan’s growing digital economy. He highlighted the importance of fostering connectivity and expanding access to government and financial services, especially for marginalized groups like women and entrepreneurs.

The DEEP aims to develop robust digital authentication and data-sharing platforms, enabling Pakistan to respond more effectively to shocks, enhance e-government services, and promote regulatory reforms to encourage private sector participation while ensuring personal data protection and online safety.

Moreover, the project seeks to promote financial inclusion, particularly among women, by facilitating access to banking services and credit through smartphone applications. It also aims to address barriers such as limited mobility and digital literacy, ensuring inclusivity in the digital sphere.

Shan Rehman, Task Team Leader for the project, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the initiative, adopting a holistic approach to digital transformation. He stressed the importance of inclusivity and trust in digital platforms to meet the evolving needs of the population.

Meanwhile, the additional financing for the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project aims to complete and commission rehabilitation works for barrages, including Guddu and Sukkur. It also seeks to enhance the management of three barrages in Sindh, namely Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri.

Francois Onimus, Task Team Leader for the project, highlighted the critical role of barrages in ensuring the livelihoods and climate resilience of Sindh Province. He emphasized the project’s focus on strengthening canal systems fed by these barrages to mitigate the adverse impacts of extreme weather events.

In essence, the approval of financing for these projects underscores the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development agenda, encompassing infrastructure enhancement and digital innovation, in its pursuit of sustainable growth and resilience.
