Oura Rings Unveil Lingering COVID-19 Impact on Biometrics Post-Recovery

Researchers and wearables manufacturers hastened to explore if smartwatches and fitness trackers could detect COVID-19 at the beginning of the epidemic. As of 2023, there hasn’t been much advancement in the field of Covid. Despite the fact that wearables offer promise in the detection of ailments.

But, some wearable companies are still analysing the data to see what can be learned from the previous three years. Even as the majority of people begin to move on with their lives. As an illustration, smart ring manufacturer Oura recently published a study that revealed significant alterations in its customers’ biometrics. This alteration was up to 2.5 days prior to and 10 days following their reporting of infection.

The study included 20,267 Oura members who had received the covid vaccination as well as 838 members who had self-reported covid-19 infections. It was published in the peer-reviewed journal Digital Biomarkers.

In the month before and after a vaccination or infection, it compared body temperature, resting heart rate. Also compared to heart rate variability, breathing rate, and sleep efficiency. Also, it contrasted the physiological reactions in accordance with age groups, vaccination status, and polymorphisms.

According to Tily, breathing rate and heart rate abnormalities could last up to 20 days. Although temperature variances often return to baselines after about 10 days.  it does indicate that some individuals require more time to reach their pre-infection physiological baseline levels.

In general, Tily observed that symptoms persisted for days, if not weeks. Occasionally even for a month after infection.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for the chance that consumer wearables will be able to anticipate illnesses any time soon, even if scientists were to completely embrace the idea. Wearables can detect physiological changes following infection, as shown by studies like these.

The next challenge is determining whether these gadgets can distinguish between the flu and covid. Following that, there are a variety of additional considerations to take into account, such as clinical validation, the regulatory procedure. And whether this will be restricted to particular wearable ecosystems.

In essence, the goal of this kind of research is not to establish a management strategy for COVID as it is now understood. It’s to maybe kick the next epidemic off early.
