Nasa, the US space agency, has given a technology company a sixty million dollar contract to complete the project, and it hopes to construct residential buildings on the moon by 2024.
The homes would be constructed when a 3D printer was deployed to the natural satellite of Earth. These houses would not only be for astronauts but also for civilians. To construct the building, rocks, mineral fragments, and moon dust from the surfaces would be employed.
Other components of the house, including as the doors, tiles, and furnishings, have already been constructed thanks to NASA’s collaboration with a number of organizations and for-profit businesses.
It is a part of a long-term plan that calls for the astronauts to land on Mars and establish a base there. The current state of affairs is relatively early, but over the course of the next few years, things may change. The United States Space Agency has also yet to reveal how much it would cost for a human to live on the moon.
ICON uses 3D printing in its construction methods. The method uses a filament made of a cement, sand, and water mixture. Every element of the home is printed one at a time before being assembled. The printer can construct properties as soon as 48 hours, according to reports.
Since it began operating in Austin in 2018, the company has built hundreds of homes. Due to its ease of assembly into a dwelling, the initiative grew in popularity and momentum.
Although he does not think that regular Americans will ever live on the moon. Future generations should be able to do it, according to Raymond Clinton, deputy director of the science and technology division at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. “I wish I would be around to see it.”
“To me, an environmentally friendly civilization implies a moon-based colony with people constantly living and working there,” he said. Only the entrepreneurs’ imaginations can determine what that might be. According to the business, a residence on the moon must have a structure that can withstand heat radiation and micrometeorites.
Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON, stated: “To change the space expedition paradigm from there to return again to there remain. We will require robust, resilient, and widely capable systems. That can use the readily available assets of the Moon along with other planetary bodies.”
The ICON printer will be tested in February at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Only to examine how it responds to the radiation and vacuum of space.
