Q.1) Tell us about yourself, how did you reach there

I was born and brought up in Karachi, though initially my education was not IT based, but during my graduation in physics, I started International Diploma of Computer Studies (I.D.C.S) from College of Digital Sciences which was affiliated from London Guildhall University, Manchester UK. Right after completing graduation and I.D.C.S, I have to start doing a job, but after a couple of years I started pursuing education simultaneously along with the job, did my Master’s in Economics from University of Karachi, and accomplished MBA in marketing from IQRA University. During the tenure initially got a good opportunity to serve one of the largest HP partners, Mushko Electronics, in Pakistan and later on joined Dell Global business venture. Now it’s been 23 years serving the IT Enterprise industry in Pakistan. Since I am in IT enterprise role, I have achieved many of the IT certifications which are essential part and the value additions in my career; therefore, I have achieved more than 150 certifications in various emerging fields of IT, primarily in Microsoft Technologies, Cloud, Cloud Security, Business Optimization, Digitalization, Cyber Security, Data Science, Corporate Governance and many others. My education and willingness to keep myself up to date helps me achieving many milestones during my career, and this significantly makes it possible for me to take on new challenges in life. I have been serving the IT industry in different dimensions from retail sales to corporate sales to vendor sales as principal representative now in IT enterprise distribution industry, trailing my position as associate director sales with AWAN Distribution.

Q2. How can we become a digital country?

Pakistan has a great potential to develop itself in emerging digital revolution in the world; our 64% population is less than 30 years of age and this is a real key aspect. If we put them in the right direction by making good IT and digital dynamics policies, which are the most needed trends in the world where physical larger stores, showrooms and shopping malls are being challenged by the devastating growth of digital industry.

There are several key elements which need to be seriously focused on by the government as well as colleges and universities to bring this great nation on track for the digital revolution. Some of the key steps are:

Infrastructure Development: Expanding and improving digital infrastructure is crucial. This includes increasing broadband penetration, enhancing mobile connectivity, and ensuring reliable internet access across urban and rural areas.
Digital Skills and Education: Investing in digital literacy and skills training is essential. This can be achieved through educational reforms, vocational training programs, and partnerships with tech companies to provide up-to-date training.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Encouraging innovation and supporting tech startups can drive digital transformation. This can be facilitated through incubators, accelerators, and funding opportunities for entrepreneurs.
Data Governance and Security: Establishing robust data governance frameworks and ensuring cybersecurity are vital for building trust in digital services. This includes protecting personal data and securing digital transactions.
Government Policies and Support: The government needs to implement supportive policies and regulations that foster a digital economy. This includes revising telecom policies, promoting public-private partnerships, and providing incentives for digital investments.

By focusing on these areas, Pakistan can accelerate its journey towards becoming a fully digital country, improving the quality of life for its citizens and driving sustainable economic growth.

Q3. How do you see Startups in Pakistan?

The startups in Pakistan, like any other countries in the world, are growing rapidly, especially during the hard time of covid-19; eventually, the nation opted for the digital highway with astonishing timeframes.

And during the last 3 to 4 years we have had experienced many top-of-the-line startups which are now part and parcel in our lives. Some of the key sectors are:

Diverse Sectors: including fintech, e-commerce, health tech, and logistics. For example, Tajir is a B2B platform for small businesses, GrocerApp is an online grocery store, and Dawaai is a digital health platform.
Funding and Investment: There has been a significant increase in funding for Pakistani startups. Many have attracted investments from international venture capital firms and diversified investment companies around the globe.
Innovation Hubs: Cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad are becoming innovation hubs with numerous incubators, investors and accelerators supporting new ventures, universities and software houses. Programs like National Incubation Center (NIC) which is playing a significant role in nurturing many of the emerging startups.
Role of the Government: The government is also taking steps to support the startup ecosystem through policies and initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and innovation which is much needed and we seek transformative results with the high trend of adaptability.

However, still startups in Pakistan face challenges like regulatory hurdles, capital investment and returns SOP, IT infrastructure and the policies of government key stakeholders for export and incubations. Overall, the future looks promising for startups in Pakistan, with increasing support and opportunities for growth.

Q4. How do you see Freelancing in Pakistan why is it restricted to IT only?

Freelancing is growing significantly across the globe, so it has a great opportunity for the youth of Pakistan, especially in the IT sector since Information technology is evolving rapidly and the latest tools and trends like A.I. and ChatGPT are accelerating freelancing with a high pace, but as per my experience this is not limited to IT. Many other emerging fields are getting into the race for freelancing, using IT which helps other sectors to boost like medical, consultancy, advocacy, art and culture, and many more.

IT Sector: has the significant value for Software Development, Digital Marketing, Web Development, Remote IT Consultancy; this is because of the high demand of these services globally, and as such there is no or very low barrier to get into this freelancing.

Emerging Sectors: Emerging industries are also gaining momentum with the help of the IT industry and getting traction. Now one can find many freelancing opportunities in content writing, legal services, financial and tax consultancies, project management, art and sciences, online education and many other fields. As I mentioned, emerging sectors and various fields are taking advantage of IT advancement along with internet connectivity and high availability of resources.

Pakistan has great potential for freelancing and there is a high trend, especially in college and university graduates for freelancing because of the fact this helps students and professionals to put efforts in various fields during flexible hours to thrive in the global freelancing market.
