Google Pay is set to officially launch in Pakistan by mid-March 2025, marking a significant leap forward in the country’s rapidly evolving digital payments landscape. Google confirmed the rollout in November 2024, which will be facilitated through strategic partnerships with Visa, Mastercard, and key local banks.
Seamless Payment Integration Pakistani users will soon have the ability to link their bank-issued debit and credit cards to Google Pay through the Google Wallet app. This integration will provide a smooth and secure way to make contactless payments at compatible terminals nationwide. Initially, the launch will focus on basic contactless payments, with features like loyalty cards and public transport passes to be introduced in future phases.
Infrastructure Readiness Preparations for the launch are well underway. Major banks are collaborating with Visa and Mastercard to meet the necessary technical requirements. Pakistan’s payment infrastructure is ready, with 133,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals across the country, and 99% of these terminals are equipped to accept mobile contactless payments, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.
Industry Impact Google Pay’s entry is expected to significantly boost Pakistan’s growing digital payments sector, which has shown remarkable growth in recent years. According to data from the State Bank of Pakistan, electronic payments now make up 9.3% of the total transaction value in the country, doubling over the past two years.
Experts believe that Google Wallet’s compatibility with payment cards from any financial institution will drive further adoption of digital payments across POS machines and e-commerce platforms. This development aligns with the broader push for increased digital financial inclusion in Pakistan.
Looking Ahead As Pakistan continues to embrace innovative payment solutions, Google Pay’s launch represents a major milestone in the country’s journey toward a cashless economy. While the initial rollout will focus on basic features, the future introduction of advanced functionalities is expected to strengthen the digital payment landscape further in the coming years.
