Up until now, using a password in conjunction with two-factor authentication (2FA) was the best approach to keep your accounts secure. The usage of a passkey, a secure credential linked to the PIN or biometric authentication your device already employs, is now another option that Google is providing.
You may use it for any Google account that belongs to you, though. You can setup the passwords by following the follwing easy steps.
What hardware and software requirements are there?
You can currently create a passkey for any Google account on any device that is suitable, such as laptops and desktops running Windows 10 or macOS Ventura with Chrome 109, Safari 16, or Edge 109 or later. Mobile devices must run iOS 16 or Android 9 in order to set up a passkey on them. Any hardware security key that supports the FIDO2 protocol can also be used with it. Additionally, if you wish to use your phone to sign into another device, such a laptop, you must have Bluetooth switched on and have a screen lock enabled.
How do I configure it?
- Begin by visiting g.co/passkeys.
- You might have been automatically registered for a passkey if you already have an Android phone that is signed into that account. If so, you may simply click the blue “Use passkeys” button when the device is mentioned under “Automatically created passkeys.”
- The ability to utilise a passkey will thereafter be indicated by a pop-up message. Select “Done”
- If your device isn’t mentioned (which it definitely won’t be if you’re using an iPhone), click the Create a passkey button at the bottom of the page. (Note: Using the device you wish to use as a passkey at this stage will make things much simpler. If you want to use your iPhone, then use your iPhone rather than your computer to follow these instructions.)
- A pop-up will appear, giving you the option to continue using the device you are now using as the passkey or to choose Use another device. If the latter, a QR code will be provided for you to scan using the camera on your phone.
- Additionally, you could be asked to enable iCloud Keychain if you’re using an iPhone.
What happens if I misplace or sell a gadget with a passkey?
If the device’s passkey was one you created, you can delete it from your list.
- Access your Google account.
- In the left-hand column, click Security. Scroll down to How you sign in to Google. Choose Passkeys.
- Select the passkey you wish to remove by clicking the X next to it under Passkeys you created.
Can I completely stop using passkeys?
Yes. You can resume using passwords and 2FA in the same manner if you’d like. (Note that even if the passkeys won’t be used, they will still be a part of the account.)
- Go to Security in your Google Account.
- When feasible, skip the password by scrolling down and turning it off.
