Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail are all receiving new interfaces, and Google Chat is no exception. This one is built on Google’s Material Design 3 system. This is just like the updates it sent out to its other Workspace apps.
You’ll notice some minor changes to the entire UI. As you can see in the picture below, including rounded buttons (and a rounded search bar). As well as some blue accents elsewhere. The primary message display, compose setup, new topic button, and the thread panel under direct messages. And spaces have also seen some small adjustments.
Google also unveiled a new Chat feature earlier this week that enables Space Managers to create announcement-only channels. This is similar to what is possible in Slack. An announcements space on Google Chat means no more searching for important updates. Which sounds like a helpful method to keep the team members informed.
Although the redesign doesn’t bring any unexpected changes, at least you’ll know why when you see that Google Chat has a little different appearance as it launches over the next weeks.
