The landscape of sought-after professional skills in 2024 has been reshaped by the integration of generative artificial intelligence (genAI), as revealed by a recent study conducted by a job site and insights from the education industry.

Rather than displacing workers, genAI is poised to revolutionize how technologists and professionals operate, allowing them to concentrate on innovative endeavors like product development while minimizing time spent on routine tasks that can be automated.

A study by freelance employment platform Upwork examining freelance worker earnings throughout 2023 indicates an unprecedented surge in the importance of genAI, data science, and analytics skills.

Furthermore, Upwork’s research highlights a shift towards skills-driven technological advancements, where freelancers adept in AI can command higher earnings and undertake more complex, high-value tasks by leveraging a new skill set.

Kelly Monahan, managing director of Upwork’s Research Institute, articulated this shift in a recent blog post, emphasizing that while AI is unlikely to replace most jobs, it will undoubtedly reshape the tasks and skills essential for value generation within the workforce.

Interestingly, among the fastest-growing skills in data science and analytics, “genAI modeling” and machine learning claim the top spots. Moreover, genAI modeling ranks as the most sought-after skill among the top 10 new skills in demand, encompassing expertise in AI model development and related projects such as genAI application development or fine-tuning foundational AI models.

Notably, there has been a departure from traditional degree-centric hiring practices, with employers increasingly prioritizing skills over formal education. This skills-focused approach underscores the significance of robust work experience, certifications, assessments, and endorsements, with a particular emphasis on soft skills alongside technical proficiency.

LinkedIn’s extensive skills taxonomy, comprising 41,000 skills including 121 categorized under AI, reflects this trend. The platform distinguishes between AI jobs, AI-related roles, and AI literacy positions, highlighting the multifaceted nature of AI integration across various sectors.

Dan Brodnitz, LinkedIn Global Head of Content Strategy, underscored the importance of adaptability in navigating the evolving job market, asserting that amidst significant changes, human-centric skills like communication and creativity hold paramount importance alongside technical competencies.

A recent LinkedIn survey underscores this sentiment, revealing an increasing value placed on soft skills, with communication emerging as the most in-demand skill. Notably, adaptability emerges as a crucial skill in response to the transformative impact of AI on the workforce.

Several major companies, including Boeing, Walmart, and IBM, have embraced skills-based employment initiatives, signaling a broader industry shift towards prioritizing skills development and validation.

McKinsey & Co. notes a rising demand for AI-related skills across various domains, with scripting, automation, and database development skills witnessing significant growth. Additionally, proficiency in organizing, cleaning, and classifying data remains essential for AI readiness.

Despite concerns regarding talent acquisition, CFOs acknowledge the importance of integrating genAI skills into finance organizations. The need for genAI technical expertise and fluency underscores the imperative of upskilling to remain competitive in the evolving job market.

Scott Rogers of Udemy emphasizes the necessity for continuous upskilling to navigate industry changes driven by the adoption of genAI, which is reshaping job roles and responsibilities. Moreover, as automation becomes more prevalent, professionals must strategically allocate tasks, cultivate new skills, and enhance existing ones to remain relevant.

Udemy’s observation of increased enrollments in genAI courses reflects a growing recognition of genAI’s transformative potential. Similarly, Coursera reports unprecedented demand for genAI courses, signaling a widespread appetite for acquiring genAI-related skills across various industries.

To address this demand, Udemy has launched a GenAI Skills Pack tailored to professionals across diverse domains, offering dedicated learning paths to enhance genAI proficiency relevant to specific job functions.

In conclusion, as the workforce adapts to the era of genAI, continuous upskilling and the cultivation of relevant skills emerge as critical strategies for professional success and organizational competitiveness in the evolving landscape of work.
