The first generation of carbon dioxide removal systems are being rushed to completion in the US. Global Thermostat, the first US business with this kind of system. It has just opened an office in Colorado to demonstrate that their Carbon Dioxide-sucking technology actually works.
Since it began operating in 2010 as one of just three well-known businesses worldwide developing this technology. Which is known as direct air capture, there has been buzz about Global Thermostat (DAC). The objective is to separate CO2 from the surrounding air, sell it as a product. Rather store it underground to prevent it from escaping into the atmosphere and heating up the globe.
But Global Thermostat has been roiled by years of delays and internal drama. Its former CEO, an economics professor at Columbia, had staff grading students’ papers for her at work, Bloomberg reported in 2021. The company made little progress in the decade since its founding. And all the while, its competitors had started to ink major deals to capture Carbon Dioxide for other companies.
In the words of Paul Nahi, CEO of Global Thermostat, “it’s a technology that’s just being birthed.” You cannot therefore claim that a model already exists. But you can examine history instead. What are the validated models for solar and wind?
Global Thermostat is defying the DAC firms’ historical tendency to construct huge, recognisable facilities. Comparable climate technology businesses, for example, have ambitions to build big direct air capture plants in Wyoming and Texas. These are impressive technical and political manoeuvres. For example, similar climate technology businesses intend to build huge direct air capture plants in Wyoming and Texas. These are significant engineering and political manoeuvres. Also, the industry appears to enjoy calling DAC facilities like these after enormous creatures, such as bison, mammoth, and orcas, in order to highlight how large these projects are.
Global Thermo said, “It’s a technology that’s just being birthed, for lack of a better description.” Global Thermostat needs to do more to restore its reputation in addition to its ostensibly cosy relationships with the oil and gas industry. In a 2021 investigation by Bloomberg, claims of poor management under its former CEO were exposed. According to that story, a planned agreement with a Coca-Cola bottler failed. Also, the company’s smaller prototypes in Alabama and Oklahoma were shut down, and one of the contractors is suing Global Thermostat for unpaid bills and damages.
Together with Colorado legislators and Trisha Miller, a senior director in the White House Climate Policy Office, Nancy Pelosi, a former speaker of the House, attended the launch event for Global Thermostat on Tuesday.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement that “we know that to fulfil our climate objectives and protect the future of our world, we must use every tool available, and Direct Air Capture is a critical strategy that will assist assure we achieve this.”
