Bitcoin hit an unprecedented $100,000 on Thursday, marking a monumental leap from its libertarian roots to becoming a cornerstone of mainstream finance. This surge highlights growing investor confidence in cryptocurrencies, bolstered by expectations of a crypto-supportive U.S. administration.
In 2024, the total market value of cryptocurrencies has soared to $3.8 trillion, surpassing Apple’s market capitalization of $3.7 trillion, according to CoinGecko. Bitcoin’s meteoric rise has created wealth, introduced decentralized finance, and established a revolutionary asset class.
The cryptocurrency has doubled its value this year, with over 50% of the gains occurring in just four weeks following Donald Trump’s election victory. By Thursday morning in Asia, Bitcoin surged past $100,000, reaching $103,335.
Driving Institutional Adoption and Regulatory Support
Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, described the moment as a “paradigm shift.” He attributed Bitcoin’s integration into mainstream finance to institutional adoption, advancements in payment systems, and clearer regulatory frameworks.
President Trump’s crypto-friendly stance has accelerated this momentum. His administration plans to position the U.S. as a global crypto leader, with initiatives like a national Bitcoin reserve and the formation of a crypto advisory council. Major players like Ripple, Kraken, and Circle are vying for influence in shaping the country’s crypto policies.
In a major announcement, Trump nominated Paul Atkins, a pro-crypto advocate and former SEC commissioner, to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Atkins has long supported best practices for digital assets through initiatives like the Token Alliance and Chamber of Digital Commerce.
Institutional Momentum Fuels Bitcoin’s Rally
Institutional interest continues to drive Bitcoin’s rise. Recently approved Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen over $4 billion in inflows since the U.S. election.
“In 2024 alone, institutional investors have purchased about 3% of Bitcoin’s total supply,” noted Geoff Kendrick, head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered. “Crypto is now a normalized part of trading floors, with dedicated desks operating alongside traditional markets.”
Resilience Amid Setbacks
Bitcoin’s surge to $100,000 marks a stunning recovery from its 2022 low of $16,000 following FTX’s collapse. Despite challenges like energy consumption concerns and crypto-related crime, the cryptocurrency has proven its resilience.
“Bitcoin is establishing itself as a permanent fixture in global finance,” stated Shane Oliver, AMP’s chief economist.
The cryptocurrency’s rise has mirrored gains in related stocks, with companies like MARA Holdings and Coinbase seeing a 65% jump in November alone.
Shaping the Future of Finance
Bitcoin’s adoption continues to grow with futures, options, and ETFs gaining popularity. Prominent endorsements, such as Trump’s crypto initiatives and Elon Musk’s advocacy, further cement Bitcoin’s role in global finance.
As Bitcoin integrates deeper into financial systems, its momentum is fueled by institutional participation, regulatory clarity, and evolving market demands. Russian President Vladimir Putin perhaps summed it up best: “Who can prohibit it? No one.”
