Apple seems to have discovered a way to block Android’s new iMessage app.

It seems Beeper Mini, a convenient iMessage solution for Android, was too good to last. Less than a week after its launch, users encountered technical issues preventing them from sending or receiving blue bubble messages. Throughout the day, problems escalated, with numerous reports on the Beeper subreddit.

Beeper Mini resulted from a thorough attempt to reverse engineer Apple‘s messaging protocol, successfully executed by a 16-year-old high school student.

Initially smooth, the service, requiring a $2/month subscription, now faces challenges.

Quinn Nelson from Snazzy Labs has produced an informative video detailing the technical aspects. There was a belief, or perhaps more of a hope, among Beeper’s developers and users that blocking the Android app would be such a complex task for Apple that it wouldn’t be deemed worthwhile. Surprisingly, it turned out to be easier than anticipated.

This development significantly disrupts Beeper’s plans, as the company aspired to transform Beeper Mini into an all-encompassing messaging app that would eventually integrate RCS and SMS.

When reached for comment, Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky didn’t explicitly deny that Apple had successfully blocked Beeper Mini.

He raised a crucial questions, “If it’s Apple, then I think the biggest question is… if Apple truly cares about the privacy and security of their own iPhone users, why would they stop a service that enables their own users to now send encrypted messages to Android users, rather than using unsecure SMS? With their announcement of RCS support, it’s clear that Apple knows they have a gaping hole here. Beeper Mini is here today and works great. Why force iPhone users back to sending unencrypted SMS when they chat with friends on Android?”
