In Karachi, the emergence of the deadly Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, has raised significant alarms as the death toll surpasses double digits. Concerns loom over the government’s ability to contain its spread, akin to recurring diseases like dengue and malaria.

Since its first appearance in 2008, Naegleria’s impact has escalated, with a rapid progression leading to death within 1 to 18 days. It was highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.

Dr. Faisal Mehmood from the Aga Khan Hospital’s Infectious Diseases Department explained that the amoeba, thriving in freshwater, enters the brain through the nose, causing a swift and often fatal infection.

Symptoms unfold in two stages, starting with fever, nausea, and vomiting, followed by a stiff neck. Then more symptoms come forward like altered mental status, hallucinations, and coma are  Diagnosis occurs through a lumbar puncture. By revealing the grim reality that there is currently no cure for the disease. The reveal comes with only two documented survivors in Pakistan.

The tragic death of Kashif Qamar in October exemplifies the devastating consequences of the government’s alleged negligence. Qamar’s brother, Asif, points to the responsibility of the government and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) in ensuring clean water for citizens.

Similar sentiments resonate among the families of 10 others who lost loved ones this year due to the brain-eating amoeba.

Leaders like Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman hold the Mayor of Karachi and the former Sindh government accountable for the deaths. Emphasizing the need for proper devolution of power to local governments.

Despite the grim statistics—103 deaths in Karachi since 2011—the Sindh Health Department remains noncommittal about the existence of Naegleria since 2008.

The presence of harmful bacteria is in Karachi’s water, as revealed by KWSB’s October report. This further underscores governance failure. Faraz Haseeb of Liaquat Town advocates for empowered local representatives, contending that they can play a vital role in addressing water-related crises.

As the city grapples with bureaucratic mismanagement and a lack of coordinated efforts, the call for urgent action intensifies. Dr. Sameen Sarfaraz recommends adding chlorine to the water supply to curb Naegleria’s spread.

The silence from Karachi’s Mayor and the KWSB CEO raises questions about the government’s commitment to combating this deadly amoeba.
