Artificial intelligence (AI) or a sonographer are better able to evaluate and diagnose heart function following reading of an echocardiography. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai found that AI outperformed human echocardiography assessments in terms of detecting. And diagnosing heart function. The results are based on a groundbreaking, blinded, randomised clinical study of artificial intelligence in cardiology conducted by researchers at Cedars-Smidt Sinai’s Heart Center and Division of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.
Dr. David Ouyang, a cardiologist and the study’s senior author, noted that the findings “have direct consequences for patients undergoing cardiac function testing as well as larger ramifications for the field of cardiac imaging.” This experiment provides solid proof that applying AI in this unique method can enhance the accuracy and efficacy of echocardiography imaging for a large number of patients.
Researchers are sure that when this technology is implemented across the Cedars-Sinai clinical system and health systems nationwide, it will be useful.

One of the first artificial intelligence (AI) tools to evaluate cardiac function, specifically left ventricular ejection fraction — the primary heart measurement used in evaluating cardiac function — was created by researchers at Stanford University and the Smidt Heart Center in 2020. Among the conclusions:
- Cardiologists were more often in agreement with the AI’s initial judgement and just 16.8% of them required revision.
27.2% of the initial assessments made by the sonographers required revision by cardiologists. - The doctors were unable to distinguish between assessments given by sonographers and those made by AI.
- Sonographers and cardiologists both benefitted from the AI’s aid.
The Food and Drug Administration has previously approved artificial intelligence tools without data from prospective clinical trials. Susan Cheng, MD, MPH, believes that the study has set higher standards for AI technologies seeking regulatory approval. Healthcare facilities are increasingly using AI to enhance efficiency and quality. This offers greater assurance to healthcare providers.
