On Wednesday, OpenAI finalized an agreement for Sam Altman’s comeback as CEO, concluding an extensive deliberation about the startup’s future in the AI sector.

The deal also encompasses a provisional reorganization of the board that had previously removed Altman. Noteworthy additions include former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who will join existing director and Quora CEO, Adam D’Angelo.

In a post on X, Sam Altman expressed his eagerness, stating, “I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI.

“Sam Altman, a prominent figure in the tech industry, has made a surprising return to the helm of OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab. Altman, who co-founded OpenAI, was abruptly ousted as CEO, sparking a wave of uncertainty and employee unrest.

Emmett Shear as its interim CEO, while the departing leader, Sam Altman, had indicated his move to Microsoft. Altman’s abrupt removal on Friday came as a shock to both him and co-founder Greg Brockman, who resigned from the company in response to Altman’s dismissal. However, in a post on X on Wednesday, Brockman revealed his decision to rejoin the company following Altman’s reinstatement.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who had announced Altman’s hiring on Monday, expressed his welcome for this recent development, describing it as a “first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance” in a post on X.

The sudden exits of Altman and Brockman on Friday surprised employees who learned about the management change from an internal message and the company’s public blog.

Altman gained prominence with the launch of OpenAI‘s AI chatbot last year, triggering a surge in AI research, development, and substantial investments in the sector.
