OpenAI board dismisses ChatGPT founder Sam Altman; Technology officer steps in as interim CEO until a replacement is secured.
On Friday, OpenAI‘s board made a surprising move by firing CEO Sam Altman, a key figure in generative AI, creating ripples in the tech industry. OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, steps in as interim CEO while the company actively seeks a permanent replacement.
The sudden management change surprised employees, who discovered it through an internal announcement and the company’s public blog. OpenAI’s statement on Altman’s departure cited a lack of consistent candor, hindering the board’s ability to fulfill responsibilities.
In response, Greg Brockman, OpenAI president and co-founder, resigned from the board as chairman. He announced his departure on the messaging platform X late on Friday, stating, “Based on today’s news, I quit.”
OpenAI, backed by significant funding from Microsoft, gained prominence in November with the release of its ChatGPT chatbot, sparking a surge in generative AI interest. Trained on vast datasets, generative AI can generate human-like content, aiding users in tasks ranging from term papers to novel writing. Regulators responded with revisions to AI regulations, such as the European Union’s updated AI Act.
Altman, previously associated with Y Combinator, served as a global advocate for OpenAI and generative AI technology throughout the year. Altman’s X post following OpenAI’s blog expressed appreciation for his transformative time at OpenAI and teased more details about his future.
As of now, Altman has not responded to requests for comment, and OpenAI remains unavailable for further remarks. Murati, with prior experience at Tesla, joined OpenAI in 2018, eventually becoming the Chief Technology Officer and overseeing product launches, including ChatGPT.
