Google Secures Significant Offshore Wind Agreement

Google has unveiled its most extensive offshore wind energy agreement to power its European data centers. The tech giant has finalized power purchase agreements for two new offshore wind farms situated off the coast of the Netherlands, contributing a substantial 700 megawatts to the regional grid.

This strategic move is an integral part of Google’s ambitious plan to align all of its data center electricity consumption with clean energy generation on a 24/7 basis by the year 2030.

CrossWind and Ecowende, collaborative ventures involving energy heavyweights Shell and Eneco, have established the power purchase agreements. Additionally, these agreements mark a significant stride toward developing wind farms, namely Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) and Hollandse Kust West (HKW), anticipated to collectively supply approximately 6 percent of the Netherlands’ annual electricity consumption. Google’s Dutch data centers are poised to reach a commendable 90 percent clean energy consumption this year, reflecting the company’s dedicated commitment to sustainability.

In addition to these landmark agreements, Google has also revealed smaller deals for renewable energy acquisitions from onshore wind and solar farms in Italy, Poland, and Belgium.

Simultaneously, this broader commitment to diverse regions aligns with Google’s overarching objective to locally and hourly secure carbon-free energy. This shift in approach addresses challenges posed by the declining prices of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and aims to incentivize the development of new renewable energy projects.

Furthermore, Google, alongside industry counterparts like Microsoft, is actively working to overcome challenges associated with RECs by committing to the real-time purchase of carbon-free energy. Simultaneously, this innovative strategy emphasizes purchasing renewable energy generated locally and concurrently with the operation of their systems. Such commitments play a crucial role in encouraging the expansion of local power grids’ capacity for generating and storing clean energy consistently.

In the realm of offshore wind energy, where costs have seen an upswing leading to project closures, Google’s support arrives as a welcome boost. Moreover, increased collaboration and investment could mitigate challenges faced by the offshore wind industry, especially in Europe and the US, where Google maintains a substantial number of data centers.
