Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Finance Minister, actively participated in a significant meeting hosted by the World Bank in Washington DC. The meeting primarily centered around a report outlining a roadmap for Pakistan’s economic future. According to this report, Pakistan has the potential to elevate itself to a high-middle-income country by 2047, with its economy projected to surge from the current size of US$ 300 billion to an impressive US$ 3 trillion.

During his engagement, Aurangzeb commended the World Bank’s strategic focus on critical global issues such as climate change, digitalization, and human development, aligning with Pakistan’s government priorities. He particularly lauded the World Bank’s initiative to streamline operations through a single platform, expected to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

In addition to the World Bank meeting, Aurangzeb held discussions with representatives from Moody’s Investor Service, providing an overview of Pakistan’s economic progress and stabilization efforts. He highlighted positive outcomes under the Stand-by Arrangement (SBA) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and emphasized strategic priorities, including tax reforms, energy sector restructuring, and privatization.

Aurangzeb also outlined intentions to explore opportunities in international capital markets, focusing on attracting investments from the Middle East and China to support Pakistan’s economic growth. He addressed economic concerns raised by Moody’s, expressing confidence in the government’s capacity to tackle challenges and implement reforms fostering sustainable economic growth.

Optimistic about a potential credit rating upgrade by Moody’s, Aurangzeb showcased Pakistan’s stable macroeconomic indicators and emphasized the government’s reform agenda during a roundtable session with potential investors. He highlighted decreasing inflation rates, stable currency value, robust agricultural sector growth, strong remittance inflows, and increasing foreign exchange reserves.

During his visit, Aurangzeb met Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, CEO of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), discussing avenues for strengthening economic cooperation. He reviewed progress on ongoing development projects and explored future investment opportunities, including funding for major infrastructure projects.

Additionally, Aurangzeb met with Andrew Mitchell, the UK’s Minister of State for Development and Africa, expressing gratitude for the UK’s support in various sectors and inviting British International Investment (BII) to explore opportunities in Pakistan. He also discussed economic achievements with officials from Citibank, highlighting the government’s commitment to key reforms and attracting foreign investment.

Aurangzeb’s active engagements during the IMF and World Bank’s 2024 Spring Meetings reflect Pakistan’s commitment to economic partnerships, foreign investments, and sustainable growth. He leads Pakistan’s delegation, joined by key officials from finance and economic divisions, underlining the nation’s dedication to economic progress.
