Karachi – Pakistan’s IT sector has the potential to transform the economy, stated Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in a video message during the opening of the Pakistan Start-Up Summit 2024. Organized by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in Karachi, this two-day summit brought together founders, policymakers, international experts, and stakeholders to discuss ways to build a resilient and dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Minister Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s commitment to innovation as an economic driver, praising SECP’s recent efforts, including the Regulatory Sandbox and streamlined incorporation processes, which aim to bolster fintech, digital finance, and high-growth sectors.

    Empowering Pakistan’s Innovators

In his keynote, SECP Chairman highlighted Pakistan’s start-up sector’s opportunities and challenges. “At SECP, we aim not only to adapt but to lead,” he said, affirming SECP’s commitment to empowering innovators and building a stable, growth-oriented environment. He pointed to initiatives like the Regulatory Sandbox and the LEAP platform, designed to turn Pakistan into a regional hub for innovation, especially within fintech and embedded finance.

SECP Commissioner Mujtaba Ahmad Lodhi opened the summit by emphasizing collaboration’s role in creating an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem, reaffirming SECP’s mission to build a platform for Pakistan’s innovators.

    International Perspectives and Key Panels

The UK’s Deputy High Commissioner, Sara Mooney, added an international perspective, underscoring the global interest in Pakistan’s growing start-up ecosystem. Day one included six panel discussions covering vital aspects of building a resilient, inclusive ecosystem, such as:

    • Founders’ Perspectives on Building Start-Ups in Pakistan: Leading founders shared insights into their journeys, emphasizing innovation, market strategy, and the importance of ecosystem support.
    • Strategies for Resilient Growth: Panelists discussed core elements like capital access, digital innovation, and regulatory reforms crucial to start-up sustainability.
    • Empowering Female Entrepreneurs: This session highlighted challenges for women entrepreneurs and explored ways to support women-led start-ups for a more inclusive ecosystem.
    • Fostering a Conducive Ecosystem: Policymakers and funding agencies explored strategies to bridge regulatory and funding gaps to aid start-up growth.
    • Navigating Pakistan’s Start-Up Landscape: Experts examined barriers to capital, talent, and market access, and ways to create a supportive environment.
    • Capital Markets for Start-Up Growth: Industry leaders discussed how regulatory reforms in Pakistan’s capital markets can boost start-up funding.

The first day concluded with remarks from Befiler Chairman Syed Asad Ali Shah, who praised SECP’s dedication to developing a competitive, sustainable start-up ecosystem.

A Milestone for Innovation and Economic Development

Pakistan Start-Up Summit 2024, led by SECP, sets the stage for a collaborative future for entrepreneurship in Pakistan. Positioned as a landmark event, it lays a foundation for stakeholder collaboration and aims to position Pakistan as a key player in the global start-up landscape, driving economic growth through innovation.
