The Karachi Electric SupplyCompany, K-Electric has entered into an agreement with Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) to supply its 900MW power plant at Port Qasim (BQPS-III) with 150mmcfd RLNG. The signing of the agreement took place on Tuesday and was attended by Muhammad Hammad Azhar (Minister for Energy), Tabish Gauhar (Special Assistant to the Prime Minister), and secretary petroleum. The Gas Supply Agreement (GSA) was done by Moonis Alvi (chief operating officer of K-Electric) and Masood Nabi (CEO of PLL).

The project at Port Qasim (BQPS-III) is KE’s flagship project which is expected to add 900 MW to K-electric’s generation supply. It is expected to meet the growing demand for electricity in Karachi. Since Pakistan’s local gas output has declined it is now depending on LNG to meet its growing demand for gas.
Minister Azhar congratulated both the organizations at the ceremony and said that it is,
“…a step in the right direction for the future of Karachi and a positive move for both KE and PLL which ensures the interests of both parties as well as Karachi”.
Moonis Alvi also shared his comments on the ceremony saying that the plant will be a great way to support the socio-economic growth in Karachi.
The new steps taken by the government might be the solution to the electricity issues in Karachi which are especially worse during the summer season. Karachi has faced unannounced load shedding for several hours during the hot summer days. The RLNG-based power plant is expected to be completed by the end of this year and the cost has rounded to around $650 million.
