Pakistan to Launch National Digital Payment Index to Accelerate Payment Digitization
Pakistan is gearing up to launch a National Digital Payment Index (DPI), a significant move to track and enhance the progress of digital payments across the country. This initiative will provide policymakers, financial institutions, and the private sector with a vital tool to assess the adoption of digital payment systems and drive future developments, aligning with Pakistan’s digital transformation goals.
The DPI will offer a comprehensive framework to measure digital payment adoption across various channels, regions, and demographics. By pinpointing gaps and opportunities within the existing digital payment infrastructure, the index will support targeted policy actions and investments, steering Pakistan toward a more inclusive and efficient financial system.
Tracking the Evolution of Digital Payments in Pakistan
Karandaaz Pakistan, in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), will lead the development of the DPI. This initiative builds on their previous success with the RAAST payment system. By compiling fragmented data into a structured and standardized metric, the DPI will offer crucial insights into consumer behavior and the effectiveness of current digital payment solutions. It will enable stakeholders to monitor the evolution of Pakistan’s payment landscape and make informed decisions moving forward.
Countries worldwide have introduced similar indices, such as the Mastercard Digital Payment Index, to track the growth of digital payments. Pakistan’s DPI will follow this model, tracking key indicators like account penetration, card usage, Point-of-Sale (POS) adoption, QR code payments, and mobile payment infrastructure.
Objectives of the Digital Payment Index
The DPI is set to accomplish several key objectives:
- Measure Adoption and Usage: It will monitor the adoption and frequency of digital payments across various channels, offering insights into transaction volumes.
- Deliver Actionable Insights: The index will compile fragmented market data into a structured, reliable tool, highlighting emerging trends in consumer behavior and payment preferences.
- Understand Consumer Behavior: It will provide an in-depth view of consumer preferences, perceived convenience, and security of digital payments, helping stakeholders address pain points.
- Standardize Metrics: The DPI will establish a standardized set of metrics to measure digital payment growth across different regions and demographics.
- Support Data-Driven Decision-Making: The index will empower regulators, financial institutions, and the private sector with data-backed insights to guide decision-making and track progress.
- Benchmarking Against Global Standards: Pakistan’s DPI will allow the country to compare its digital payment progress with international benchmarks, identifying areas for improvement.
Periodic Updates for Informed Monitoring
To keep the index up-to-date, it will undergo periodic revisions with data sourced from the SBP and Karandaaz Pakistan. This will allow for continuous monitoring of digital payment trends and consumer behavior across the country.
Karandaaz Pakistan has already opened proposals for designing the DPI, focusing on integrating data from publicly available sources into a cohesive measurement tool. As the index evolves, it will play a critical role in helping stakeholders identify gaps, craft targeted interventions, and monitor their impact over time.
As Pakistan advances its digital transformation journey, the launch of the National DPI will be a key milestone in building a dynamic digital economy. By fostering innovation and greater adoption of digital payments, the DPI will position Pakistan as a leader in digital financial services, driving sustainable economic growth.
