The first-ever plant to be grown wholly in space, a zinnia plant. It was revealed in a picture by NASA on Tuesday, marking their historic accomplishment.

Understanding plant development is necessary for long-distance food cultivation. As far away as Mars due to the rapid advancements in space technology and the regular human visits to the International Space Station.

For this to be possible, Nasa previously started growing flower harvests in space in 2015. As soon as NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren turned on the Veg system and its zinnia seed-filled root “pillows.”

Today, almost eight years after it was planted. The US space agency released a photo of the zinnia plant that thrived aboard the International Space Station.

This zinnia was grown in orbit at the vegetable lab of the International orbit Station, according to a comment made by Nasa when posting the photo of the plant. Despite the fact that since the 1970s scientists have been studying plants in space, Kjell Lindgren of NASA launched this particular experiment on the International Space Station in 2015.

Moreover, NASA emphasised the importance of the space garden by saying that it is not simply for show. Long-term trips to the Moon, Mars, and beyond will benefit from knowing how plants grow in space, the business stated. “Understanding how plants grow in space will help understand how to grow crops on Earth.”

In addition to the plant, NASA astronauts have grown lettuce, tomatoes, and chilli peppers. They have been successful in growing plants on the International Space Station (ISS), and they hope to grow more.

According to NASA, growing zinnias gives scientists on Earth knowledge on how plants thrive in microgravity and equips astronauts with autonomous gardening for long-duration space travel.

However, many scientific enthusiasts expressed their enthusiasm in the comment area after being inspired by the photograph.

“Flowers and space are two beautiful things that come together. Thank you, NASA,” one user said. A different user said, “Unbelievable and beautiful.”
