Today marks the formal launch of Microsoft’s official testing of Windows 11 version 23H2 with Windows Insiders in Release Preview. The upgrade, which the firm disclosed in a blog post, appears to consist merely of an upgrade to the embedded Teams client, removing the Chat button from the taskbar, and renaming to Microsoft Teams.
You undoubtedly think that’s not right, especially in light of the company’s recent announcement of a number of upgrades for all Windows 11 customers. But the business asserts that version 23H2 is not present in that.
In fact, Microsoft is avoiding using the correct Windows 11 version 23H2 nomenclature when referring to the update that contains the majority of the new features.
The branding for version 23H2 won’t be used until a Patch Tuesday update in November. When all the changes being released today will be fully accessible to all users. Instead, that update will only be a patch for Windows 11 version 22H2.
Therefore, Windows 11 version 23H2 only officially includes one change, which is a patch for the Microsoft Teams app. However, that’s not how Microsoft operates. In truth, you could consider all the new features that are being released today to be a part of Windows 11 version 23H2.
So what exactly does Microsoft’s official changelog for Windows 11 version 23H2 include? Nothing other than replacing the outdated Chat interface with Microsoft Teams (Free). But there are some intriguing changes in this release.
You can slide the new tiny mode of Teams about the screen. And quickly switch between the large display and the mini mode, and it resembles the old Chat box in earlier iterations of Windows 11.
The new Teams app directly uses the Phone Link program, skipping Microsoft’s servers for SMS conversion. Then links to your phone so you can send text messages and request meetings using your regular phone number.
In order to enable audio chats with pals while gaming, Microsoft also cites a new Play Together integration with Xbox Game Bar. However, this feature is already available without that upgrade.
Joining the Release Preview stream of the Insider program will allow you to preview the new name. Also preview the upgrades to the Teams app if having access to all the features of Windows 11 version 23H2 isn’t enough for you. Then, to receive the most recent bits and to alter your build number to 22631, check for updates.
