During the first eight months (July-March) of the current fiscal year 2023-24, Pakistan experienced a notable surge in export remittances from its Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) sector. This encompassed various services such as computer services and call center services, which collectively contributed to a substantial increase of approximately 17.37 percent.

The total export remittances during this period amounted to a significant $2.283 billion, showcasing a remarkable growth trajectory compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, which stood at $1.945 billion.

The trajectory of this growth is further emphasized when considering the month-on-month (MoM) analysis for March 2024. During this month, the sector witnessed a notable increase of around four percent in export remittances, reaching an all-time high of $306 million. This achievement surpasses the previous monthly record set in December 2023, indicating a consistent upward trend in export performance.

Furthermore, the year-on-year (YoY) comparison for March 2024 highlights an exceptional growth rate of approximately 36 percent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. This substantial increase underscores the resilience and dynamism of Pakistan’s IT and ITeS sector, positioning it as a key driver of economic growth and export revenue generation.

However, amidst these remarkable achievements, challenges persist in maximizing the sector’s export potential. Issues such as policy inconsistencies, taxation challenges, and banking hurdles continue to pose obstacles to fully realizing the sector’s capabilities. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications has recognized these constraints and is actively working towards addressing them to unleash the full export potential of Pakistan’s information technology sector, estimated to be around $15 billion.

Through strategic interventions and collaborative efforts, Pakistan aims to further enhance its position as a global player in the IT and ITeS industry, contributing significantly to the country’s economic prosperity and competitiveness on the global stage.
