Inside the Creative Process of Experiential Marketing: Syed Sohaib Shahid’s Journey

Crafting immersive brand experiences through innovation, cultural relevance, and seamless digital integration

How do you approach the creative process when designing an experiential campaign that stands out in a crowded market?

In a crowded market, designing an experiential campaign that stands out requires a multi-layered approach grounded in deep understanding and fresh perspectives. Here’s how I approach the creative process:

    1. Understanding the Brand and Audience: Every campaign must reflect the brand’s core values and speak to its target audience. I start by immersing myself in the brand’s ethos and understanding its unique selling propositions (USPs). This involves research on the audience’s preferences, behaviors, and emotional triggers, which helps create relevant and resonant experiences.
    2. Cultural and Contextual Relevance: In markets like Pakistan, cultural nuances play a vital role. I look for ways to embed local flavor into the campaign without diluting the brand’s identity. For example, during the relaunch of RoarX, we identified snooker clubs as key youth hangout spots and created a customized experience for that space, making the brand culturally relevant.
    3. Innovation in Immersion: An experiential campaign must provide an unforgettable, immersive moment. I focus on creating environments where consumers can physically or emotionally engage with the brand. Whether through dynamic digital integrations, unique product trials, or surprise-and-delight tactics, the goal is to create a deep connection. For MG Motors, we embraced iconic British elements, tying them to Pakistan’s evolving auto culture, making the event both aspirational and locally grounded.
    4. Seamless Multi-channel Integration: A campaign isn’t confined to a single event or interaction. I always design with multiple touchpoints in mind—whether through digital amplification, influencer partnerships, or real-time customer feedback. The Sprite 2023 summer campaign, for instance, thrived on real-time engagement by leveraging heat-relief stations and social media buzz simultaneously, creating a holistic experience.
    5. Bold and Unconventional Ideas: The final ingredient is pushing creative boundaries. This means being bold enough to break from the norm, as we did with the Peugeot 2008 launch, where we reimagined the traditional auto launch format by incorporating factory spaces and luxury in the same breath, offering a world-class experience in an unexpected setting.

By combining these elements, the goal is to create not just a campaign, but a memorable experience that stays with people long after the event has passed.

Can you share an example of a highly successful event or experiential campaign you executed? What made it successful, and what were the key takeaways?

One of the most successful experiential campaigns I executed was the relaunch of MG Motors in Pakistan, titled “The Great MG Show.” This campaign marked the post-COVID re-entry of MG Motors, and we aimed to make a bold statement in the automotive industry, blending British legacy with local relevance.

    What Made It Successful:

    1. Cultural Integration: The campaign revolved around iconic British cultural symbols—such as the Queen, Royal British Guards, and phone booths—blending them with pop culture references like James Bond, David Beckham, Sherlock Holmes, and Austin Powers amongst others. These elements connected MG’s British heritage to the local audience in a fun and memorable way, making the event aspirational but relatable.
    2. Innovative Execution: We created a fully immersive experience, incorporating larger-than-life installations and curated zones that allowed attendees to explore MG’s rich legacy while physically engaging with the cars. From the moment attendees stepped into the event space, they were greeted with a mix of nostalgia, modernity, and innovation, making it an engaging and multi-sensory experience.
    3. Attention to Detail: The event was meticulously planned to reflect the premium identity of MG Motors. From the setup to the branded interactions, we ensured every touchpoint delivered on quality. We used thematic lighting, sound design, and live performances to immerse attendees further into the brand experience, giving them the feeling of being part of something extraordinary.
    4. Local Touchpoints: While capitalizing on MG’s British identity, we didn’t overlook the local market’s preferences. We incorporated test drives, product interactions, and customer feedback loops, tailored to the Pakistani audience’s excitement for new auto brands.
    5. Impactful Media and Social Amplification: The campaign wasn’t just limited to the physical event. We built extensive pre-event hype through digital and social media, celebrity endorsements, and influencer partnerships. The event’s success was amplified by real-time sharing across platforms, which helped generate massive brand awareness and engagement.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Immersion is key: People remember how a brand makes them feel, not just what it says. Immersive experiences that engage multiple senses are far more memorable and impactful.
    • Localization with a global twist: Merging international legacy with local context creates an aspirational yet relevant experience, helping the brand resonate deeply with local audiences.
    • Detail-Oriented Execution: Success lies in the details, from the visual aesthetics to customer engagement. Every element needs to reflect the brand’s persona.
    • Multi-Channel Integration: The event’s success didn’t end with the physical experience—it extended online, allowing for sustained brand presence and engagement.

This campaign helped MG Motors establish a strong foothold in the market, leaving a lasting impression on the audience and setting a new standard for auto brand launches in Pakistan.

How do you integrate digital and physical experiences in your campaigns to create a seamless brand journey for consumers?

To create a seamless brand journey, we integrate digital and physical experiences by ensuring consistent messaging across all touchpoints and engaging audiences before, during, and after the event. Pre-event digital campaigns build anticipation, while interactive tools like AR, QR codes, and social media integrations enhance real-time engagement at physical events. Post-event digital follow-ups maintain momentum and deepen connections. This approach allows for personalized, immersive experiences, amplifies brand reach, and provides valuable insights for continuous improvement, ensuring a unified and impactful consumer journey.

What emerging trends in experiential marketing do you think will shape the industry in the next 2-3 years, and how are you preparing to leverage them?

In the next 2-3 years, experiential marketing will likely be shaped by a blend of digital innovation and cost-effective creativity due to global inflation and tighter client budgets, including in Pakistan.

    1. Hybrid Experiences: As brands face financial constraints, hybrid events (combining physical and virtual elements) will continue to grow, offering high engagement at lower costs. We’re preparing by developing scalable, interactive digital platforms that allow brands to maintain an immersive presence while reducing the need for large-scale physical setups.
    2. Localized and Community-Focused Campaigns: With limited budgets, brands will focus on hyper-local, community-driven experiences. We’re shifting toward more intimate, culturally relevant engagements that maximize impact with smaller, well-targeted activations, similar to our RoarX snooker club strategy.
    3. Sustainability: Cost-effective, sustainable practices will become crucial as clients look to reduce expenses without sacrificing impact. We’re integrating sustainable event solutions like reusable materials and eco-friendly setups, which resonate with global trends and consumer expectations, especially in Pakistan.

By blending digital tools, local insights, and sustainability, we aim to offer clients impactful experiences that align with both their budgets and consumer expectations.

What are the biggest challenges you face when organizing large-scale events, and how do you overcome them?

When organizing large-scale events like Soul Fest, several challenges arise, but overcoming them has helped make this event a favorite for families year after year.

    1. Logistical Coordination: Large-scale events involve complex logistics—venue management, security, vendor coordination, and crowd control. For Soul Fest, ensuring seamless entry and exit for thousands of attendees, while also maintaining safety, is a top priority. To overcome these challenges, we introduced pre-event ticketing systems and strategically planned venue layouts to handle large crowds efficiently.
    2. Vendor Management: With multiple food vendors, balancing expectations while maintaining quality and variety is a challenge. Over the years, we’ve developed relationships with trusted vendors, established standardized protocols for hygiene and service, and curated a diverse mix of cuisines to keep the food experience fresh and exciting.
    3. Entertainment Lineup: Curating a music lineup that appeals to different demographics and age groups is another challenge. Each year, Soul Fest offers a blend of local talent and popular artists to ensure there’s something for everyone. By closely monitoring attendee feedback and music trends, we’ve been able to build anticipation for our performances.
    4. Weather-Related Issues: Outdoor events are vulnerable to unpredictable weather, which can disrupt both setup and attendee experience. We’ve learned to mitigate these risks by investing in weather-resistant infrastructure like tents, backup lighting, and contingency plans for rain delays.
    5. Marketing & Engagement: Sustaining excitement over the years requires consistent and creative marketing. Soul Fest has successfully leveraged digital channels, influencers, and family-friendly content to build a loyal following. We’ve also introduced engaging on-ground activations, ensuring that each year offers something new to keep people coming back.

By implementing these best practices, Soul Fest has become a must-attend annual event for families, offering the perfect blend of food, music, and a safe, enjoyable environment.
