FDA Clearance for Neuralink’s Device Doesn’t Equate to a Cure for Blindness

Neuralink’s FDA-approved Blindsight advances vision technology but falls short of Musk’s ambitious claims on curing blindness

Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface company, received “breakthrough device” clearance from the FDA on Tuesday. However, this doesn’t mean they’ve developed a cure for blindness, despite Musk’s bold claims.

The FDA’s breakthrough devices program allows developers to interact with experts for priority review during the premarket phase. While Neuralink’s device, Blindsight, earned this designation, it follows a long history of similar technologies designed to restore limited vision. The device uses a microelectrode array implanted in the visual cortex to stimulate neurons based on camera input, a method that has existed for decades.

Musk quickly claimed that Blindsight will enable people without eyes or an optic nerve, and even those blind from birth, to see. But it’s premature to make such promises. The technology’s limitations—like low electrode density—mean users would perceive only faint visual stimuli without clear patterns. Neuralink’s improvement in electrode density is promising but faces the same fundamental challenges.

Musk’s suggestion that the device will restore full sight oversimplifies the complexity of vision restoration. Even for those who recently lost their sight, the brain’s adaptation to such devices is slow and disorienting. For those blind since birth, the pathways required for visual processing never fully developed, making it unlikely that the device would offer conventional sight.

Despite these challenges, Neuralink’s work could still be a significant step forward. The company has made meaningful advances in microelectrode arrays, potentially improving implantation safety and effectiveness. While Musk’s claims are exaggerated, Neuralink’s efforts may pave the way for future breakthroughs in blindness treatments.

As Neuralink moves forward with FDA approval, hopefully, they’ll share their research more openly to foster a productive dialogue among experts in the field.
