Facebook has decided to remove location-based features by the end of this month. The social media platform announced the change a few days ago but failed to give reasons why. It claims to remove all the user-related history from its server
Facebook recently removed the Nearby Friends feature on iOS and Android devices. The feature allowed iPhone and Android users to share their current location with other Facebook friends that were also nearby. Facebook is currently retiring features such as Time Alerts, Location History, and Background Location.
How will Facebook’s decision to remove features affect the social media experience?
Nearby Friends and Weather alerts will no longer function after May 31, 2022. All data for these experiences including Location History and Background Location will stop being collected after May 31, 2022, even if Location History and Background Location are currently turned “on.”
The information collected as a result of location history will be available for download by August 1, 2022, after which the data will be deleted.
The deletion of these features, however, does not mean that Facebook will stop collecting users’ location ‘for other experiences.’
