In the very early hours of Tuesday, India’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which had spent the previous two weeks in the earth orbit. The spacecraft began its ascent to the moon by entering the translunar orbit.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) tweeted, “Next stop: the moon.” In roughly four days, the spaceship will travel to the moon. It will begin orbiting the moon on August 5. And move in a similar manner to how it has been moving around the earth up to this point.
It will gradually descend into a lower and lower lunar orbit until it reaches a 100 km-radius circular orbit. The final drop of the spacecraft and probe module will take place from this elliptical orbit on or around August 23.
Chandrayaan-3, which was launched on July 14, it is stated to become India’s first spacecraft to land gently on the moon. Chandrayaan-2, India’s previous effort, failed to successfully land in 2019.
In order to prepare for the landing, the space ship will operate for the next 18 days or so orbiting the moon and slowing down. The integrated spacecraft’s final orbit would be 100 kilometers around the moon. After then, the lander and rover will detach from the propulsion module and settle on the ground.
The present and earlier Indian missions have used the earth’s gravity to enhance the velocity. By travelling around it and progressively extending the orbit rather than shooting straight towards the moon.
The landing location picked for the expedition is only somewhat different from the one picked for Chandrayaan-2. The spaceship will touch down close to the southern pole of the moon at 69.36oS and 32.34oE. This area was chosen because multiple craters are continually shaded. Furthermore, this area can serve as a repository for valuable minerals and water ice.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath revealed that the spacecraft’s five engines generated higher-than-expected thrust, leading to Chandrayaan-2’s final leg failure. These mistakes increased while the craft had to stay stable, albeit still being inside constraints. To find the landing spot, the lander took photographs as it descended.
India will join the US, Russia, and China as the fourth nation to achieve a gentle landing if it happens. Also, it will mark the initial soft landing close to the southern pole of the moon. India’s Chandrayaan-1 lunar probe ventured remarkably close to the moon’s south pole, reaching 89.7oS near Shackleton crater.
