In just 18 months, according to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, AI chatbots will aid in teaching kids to read and improve their writing abilities. At the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego, the billionaire philanthropist reportedly stated that AI will “be as good a tutor as any human ever could.”
Since ChatGPT’s introduction in late November last year, companies have been rushing to develop equivalent products or integrate generative AI technology into their existing offerings. The recent quick improvement has been fueled by the intense rivalry, and ChatGPT-like chatbots can now compete with human-level intelligence on several standardised tests.
Bill Gates brought this up by stating that chatbots of today have “incredible fluency at being able to read and write.” According to him, this will soon assist pupils in ways that technology has never previously in helping them to enhance their own reading and writing.
The AIs will enter as a teacher’s assistant and provide writing criticism if you merely take the following 18 months, he continued. “And after that, they’ll boost our mathematical capabilities.”
According to Gates, teaching writing abilities to a computer has so far proven to be a very challenging endeavour. Since that level of analysis is difficult for developers to replicate in code, computers haven’t been able to identify the qualities that human teachers look for, such as narrative structure and prose clarity, he claimed.
Bill Gates also brought up the cost of AI tutors, claiming that they would be less expensive and more widely available than one-on-one human tutoring.
This ought to even things out, he remarked. Because most students can’t afford to pay for a tutor, especially one who can adapt to their needs, remember everything they’ve done, and review their entire body of work.
Gates has already expressed his enthusiasm for the technology. Bill Gates acknowledged that he enjoys playing about with ChatGPT when friends visit during a conversation with Anant Goenka at the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture in March. Later that month, he waxed lyrical about the technology once more, proclaiming that it would lessen global injustice.
