AI Startups in Pakistan: An Exploration of Opportunities and Challenges

In September of last year, Open AI CEO Sam Altman told Greylock partner Ried Hoffman, “I do not think we have yet seen folks with trillion-dollar ideas taking on Google, but that’s about to happen. OpenAI’s Chatbot attracted 100 million users within two months, prompting a swift response from Google management. The advent of ChatGPT has caused a paradigm change, which has resulted in an influx of finance into Silicon Valley for AI startups.

OpenAI, valued at $30 billion by Microsoft, is spending an exorbitant $3 million per month to operate. In March, over 1000 AI tools were released and are transforming industries including research, journalism, management, finance, and healthcare.

For companies and people willing to pay for access during peak hours, OpenAI has also offered ChatGPT Plus. This tool was experiencing issues due to the huge volume of traffic. Additionally, it offers earlier access to new enhancements and features and quicker responses.

    Startups in Pakistan and AI
In 2022, startups in Pakistan raised $347 million despite numerous economic problems. Startup funding in Pakistan recovered by 55% to $23 million in the first three months of 2023 as opposed to $15 million in the final quarter of 2022. Yet, the budget decreased significantly year over year by 86%.

Pakistan’s internal economic struggles and global monetary tightening have made it less attractive for venture capital, despite being a front runner during the pandemic.

92 businesses in Pakistan are using AI across industries such as management, retail, agriculture, and finance, according to Tracxn. Adalfi, a fintech business in Pakistan, raised $7.5 million in an investment round led by COTU Ventures and Zayn Capital for its AI-powered credit scoring platform, which aims to promote financial inclusion.

    Agronomy, AI, and Finance

One of the top industries for AI enthusiasts with problem-solving ideas to enter is finance, agriculture, and financial services. In less than three seconds, “our next portal will be able to assemble entire financial accounts,” continued Umer. He also emphasised that since ChatGPT is giving away its top AI engine, people are now more willing to move forward because they have seen the success stories of AI.

“With the introduction of ChatGPT, Crop and Weather Advisories through conventional social media will soon become redundant. With its programming skills, which can complete an hour-long task in minutes, it will also guarantee quick product creation, according to Farmdar co-founder Muzaffar Manghi.

Lack of data to train AI models, which would improve them and make the time and money invested worthwhile, is another significant problem. In industrialised nations, demographic data is frequently centrally accessible and can be used to construct AI systems. This data includes preferences for healthcare and education as well as financial and lifestyle habits.

Pakistan’s government needs to focus on digitization, but this requires a leadership without the burden of a serious economic crisis.
