Wall Street is buzzing with excitement over artificial intelligence (AI), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has taken center stage. This chipmaking giant recently achieved a historic milestone by joining the exclusive group of companies with a market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion.
This achievement positions TSMC among the world’s most valuable tech firms, highlighting the ever-growing significance of the semiconductor industry. At one point, TSMC’s market value even surpassed that of Tesla, securing its place as the seventh-largest global tech giant.
TSMC’s stock has seen remarkable growth, consistently trading above its 50-day average of $158 and reaching a new yearly peak of $192.80. Year-to-date, TSMC shares have surged by an impressive 80%.
Moreover, the semiconductor sector is currently the most dynamic segment in technology, driven by the increasing demand for high-performance chips in AI applications. In 2024, analysts project global chip sales to hit a record $611.2 billion, marking a 16% surge this year and an additional 12.5% increase next year. This growth primarily stems from advancements in generative AI, demanding substantial computing power.
Ahead of its upcoming earnings report, analysts are revising their price targets for TSMC upwards, with firms like Morgan Stanley anticipating strong sales for the year. TSMC’s strategy of maintaining tight supply, often referred to as “hunger marketing,” indicates sustained high demand for its chips in 2025, bolstering its market position. Rising chip prices, driven by AI applications, further reinforce TSMC’s competitive edge.
Simultaneously, for investors, critical considerations include TSMC’s revenue growth, profitability, and its valuation relative to other chip manufacturers.
