Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, highlighted the transformative impact of technology on skill requirements, stressing the importance of innovative approaches to meet evolving labor needs.
Addressing the closing session of the ministerial consultation of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, Mr. Tirmizi emphasized the urgency of diversifying skill sets and fostering partnerships for skills mobility.
As the current chair of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, Pakistan plays a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation among Asian countries on labor migration, aiming to ensure safe and orderly migration to major temporary labor destinations. Mr. Tirmizi underscored the platform’s role in advocating for the protection of migrant workers’ rights, emphasizing shared responsibilities between labor-sending and receiving countries.
Beyond policymaking, the Abu Dhabi Dialogue serves as a catalyst for implementing pilot projects and programs to enhance labor migration governance. Mr. Tirmizi highlighted the growing significance of technology in governing labor mobility, particularly in addressing challenges such as recruitment transparency, cost reduction, and information sharing among relevant authorities.
Despite the potential of digital platforms to streamline labor migration, member states face challenges in integrating national IT systems, ensuring data security, and addressing financial burdens. Mr. Tirmizi emphasized the need for a flexible and resilient system aligned with clear goals and adaptable to changing needs.
Recognizing the importance of gender-inclusive policies, Mr. Tirmizi commended efforts to promote women’s participation in green industries, noting their potential to fill critical skill gaps, especially in renewable energy sectors. Moreover, he emphasized the collective responsibility to mitigate climate change impacts and build resilient communities, citing the recent outcomes of COP28 hosted by the UAE.
Expressing gratitude to the Abu Dhabi Dialogue secretariat for their support during Pakistan’s chairmanship, Mr. Tirmizi highlighted the forum’s active engagement in international forums and its contribution to initiatives promoting migration governance.
