    — Malala Yousafzai (@Malala) November 9, 2021

Born in 1997, 24-year-old Malala has seen and achieved way more than an average Pakistani individual. Her strong character, ideology, and continuous efforts towards female education and empowerment earned her the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Malala Yousafzai caught the attention of global media when she narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by the TTP when she was only 15. Her outspoken ideas about children’s rights and women’s education at a time when the TTP invaded her homeland were bold actions on her part and gained her international recognition.

Malala’s father established and administered Khushal Girls High School and College in the city of Mingora. Malala received her early education in the same school. In 2007 the TTP led by Maulana Fazlullah took over the Swat Valley – their imposition of Islamic law led to the shutting down of girls’ schools and overall restricted the involvement of females in the society. At that time Malala and her family fled the valley but they returned when the situation got better.

Having a father who too believed in female rights and education – he encouraged Malala to protest against the closing of schools in her region. In 2008, she was only 11 when she gave her first speech “How Dare the Taliban Take Away My Basic Right to Education?” at a press club in Peshawar. Soon after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) approached Malala’s father as they needed someone to write regular blogs for BBC Urdu. She wrote 35 entries that were translated into English.

Malala’s first television appearance was in 2009 when she appeared in Hamid Mir’s show – Capital Talk. At the same time, the TTP had completely taken over the area and the number of suicide bombings had increased. The Yousafzai family was not able to return home due to the violence exhibited by the TTP. The same year Malala worked with The New York Times reporter Adam Ellick on a 13-minute documentary about the shutting down of schools.

In October 2011 Malala was nominated by Desmond Tutu for the International Children’s Peace Prize. The same year she earned her first National Youth Peace Prize which was later renamed the National Malala Peace Prize. In 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head by the TTP on her way to school – she was taken to England for surgery. The incident sparked outrage around the world and several activist groups came forward to protest against the assassination attempt. She stayed in Birmingham after that and returned back once she was in complete recovery.

There is a long list of awards and recognition that the young girl has received. In 2013 she won the United Nations Human Rights Prize. She was also named one of Time magazine’s most influential people in 2013.  In 2014 Malala became the Liberty Medal, given by the National Constitution Center. She was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013, whereas, in 2014 she won the prize and was named the youngest Nobel laureate.

Malala pursued her higher education at the University of Oxford in 2020. She also used her funds to open a school for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Other than her awards and achievements Malala has written multiple writings in which she wrote about her struggles and encouraged women to fight for their rights.
