London-born Lina Khan has been appointed to chair the Federal Trade Commission by President Joe Biden. The news broke a few hours after the Senate had confirmed her seat for a vote of 69-28. Khan is expected to assume office from the acting chairwoman Kelly Slaughter who was expected to run the agency permanently.
The appointment of the Yale graduate is a big blow to tech giants like Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Apple. It is regarded as a powerful antitrust move against tech giants at a time when the industry is already under severe pressure directed from the regulators, and Congress.
Lina Khan said in a statement: “It is a tremendous honor to have been selected by President Biden to lead the Federal Trade Commission,"She added, "I look forward to working with my colleagues to protect the public from corporate abuse"
Lina Khan has been working as a professor at the Columbia University Law School. She rose into prominence after her scholarly work as a Yale law student in 2017. Khan worked hard to develop a new perspective of looking at antitrust law. At 32 Lina Khan is known to be the youngest person to chair the Federal Trade Commission.
