Meta stops Bulletin newsletters, redirects resources to its discovery algorithm

The off-platform newsletter product, Bulletin, that Meta introduced last summer, is being discontinued.

The Bulletin, which was only accessible to writers by invitation. It allowed readers to sign up for newsletters from authors like Malcolm Gladwell, Tan France, and Malala Yousafzai. While some content was free, Bulletin permitted authors to charge for email subscriptions, much like a service like Substack.

A Meta representative told that “Bulletin has helped us to understand the relationship between Creators and their audiences and how to best support them in establishing their community on Facebook.” “Although this off-platform offering is coming to an end. We’re still committed to helping them and other Creators succeed and develop on our platform,” the statement continued.

Until the platform closes in early 2023, bulletin writers will continue to receive subscription fees. Additionally, authors have access to all of their subscribers’ email addresses, allowing them to notify them if they decide to move their newsletter to a different website.

Just last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed the company would halt hiring, make cost reductions, and reorganize some departments. As part of its effort to compete with TikTok, Meta claims it would redirect resources from Bulletin to work on its discovery algorithm starting today. In order to focus on Meta’s creator economy products, the business already began transferring engineering and product support away from services like Facebook News and Bulletin earlier this summer.

The company’s current biggest financial wager is on its effort to rule the metaverse. But Meta is equally committed to battling TikTok. Users have resisted Instagram’s attempts to change to a feed with more algorithmically suggested content. In favor of seeing updates from the accounts they follow. Meta is moving on with its plans to master algorithmic discovery despite this criticism.
